Dentures are removable appliances made of acrylic or porcelain that replace many or all the teeth in an arch. They have artificial teeth embedded in a pink base to create the appearance of natural teeth and gums. A partial denture replaces a few teeth and most likely will have clasps or attachments to help keep it secured by the surrounding teeth. A full or complete denture replaces all the teeth in one arch.
A partial denture is secured by neighboring teeth, clasps and attachments. Therefore, the healthier the teeth are the more secure the denture will be. However, partial dentures can be damaging to the surrounding teeth over time.
A complete or full denture is not supported by any teeth and can be more of a challenge to eat with. Complete upper dentures usually will feel more secure compared to complete lower dentures due to the suction from the roof of the mouth. Polygrip and other denture adhesives can assist in securing the dentures as well.
The most predictable and secure dentures are those supported and secured by implants. Assorted attachments can be fabricated into the dentures to allow them to snap or be screwed into the dentures. Dentures supported by implants allow you to function normally again and protect the supporting bone.
