Restorations and Sealants

A tooth-coloured filling material used for replacing broken or decayed tooth structure. Sealants are used to seal grooves on a tooth to aid in decay prevention.

With good brushing and flossing habits along with good food choices we hope to avoid cavities. Unfortunately, our teeth may have many deep pits and grooves that naturally occur when our tooth develops. These deep pits and grooves gather and retain food debris and plaque. St. Clair Dental assesses and seals these high-risk areas with sealants or preventative resins. These non-invasive procedures allow the dentist or hygienist to clean and seal these areas to aid in preventing a cavity.

Occasionally a sealant or a preventive resin restoration is not sufficient if the pit has decay present. This tooth will now require a filling or restoration. This is still a simple treatment, but the situation will require freezing to ensure the patient is comfortable. The damaged tooth structure is removed, cleaned and a filling will be placed and bonded to the tooth to seal and protect it. The restoration will then be polished and look like a natural tooth.

If you see any stains, pits or grey dark spots on the biting surface of your teeth, call us to see if a sealant, preventative resin or a restoration is needed.

Prevention is important as cavities do not cause pain or sensitivity until they are of a considerable size. The absence of pain does not mean the absence of disease.
